MAKING THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES

A Workshop exploring Devising and Story Making techniques for younger audiences

This devising workshop is aimed at those who want to make theatre for young audiences, with a focus on 'finding the story'. It provides theatre-makers with an opportunity to experiment and approach their theatre practice in a fresh new way. It aims to encourage creativity and to replenish artists' spirits and fill their hearts with stories!

As artists, we all have different ways of approching the creative process. Devising offers extraordinary freedom in approach and subject matter and also provides an opportunity for unique creative collaboration. In this workshop, the participants, led by Fiona McDonagh, will explore how different stimuli such as known stories, images, movement and props can contribute towards making theatre.

Participants will then investigate different approaches and methods such as automatic writing, tableaux work, hot seating, mind maps and improvisation to provide insight into the processes and practice of devising. Finally, the participants will explore story-line, story solving, selection and rejection of material and the generating of script and performance.

Fiona McDonagh, a founding member of Cups and Crowns is currently undertaking a PhD at Mary Immaculate College. During her time at Cups and Crowns she held the position of Drama Education officer and Co-Artistic Director. She has co-devised and directed many original plays for primary school children for the company.

Galway City and County Children’s Theatre and Research Pilot Programme will see Cups and Crowns rolling out a series of different creative projects to the City and County in 2011/2012.  These projects will include the making of new work, Theatre Making workshops for Theatre Practitioners and using an internet portal to work remotely with children to facilitate story making. We are currently touring THE MAGNIFICENT MIND OF DAISY DUNNE to schools in the west. This tour finishes at the end of June 2011. Contact Gillian for bookings. Pulling Theatre for Young Audiences into sharp focus in the West, CUPS AND CROWNS have been offered a year-long residency with both Galway City and County Councils.
